Bartle's Taxonomy of Player Types

Bartle's Taxonomy of Player Types

Bartle's Taxonomy of Player Types

The classification of player types in video games based on their preferred in-game actions, according to an article written by Richard Bartle in 1996, is called Bartle's Taxonomy.

This classification applies to both multiplayer and single-player game genres and is based on character theory. If you ask what characters are included in this character theory;

  1. Killers
  2. Achievers
  3. Socializers
  4. Explorers
They can be listed as such.

With the Bartle Test, it can be revealed which of these character types players resemble more, and based on the result for those players, game recommendations can be made.

Let’s Explain the Character Types

Killers

These are player types who love competition, who enjoy fighting with other players and the system, and who generally like action-packed, explosive games.
This is the type who likes to fight.

Achievers

Compared to other player types, these are types of players who focus on completely finishing the game.

Socializers

This type of player generally uses games to socialize, and fighting, achievements, or finishing the game is secondary for this player type.
Generally, this type aims to talk and chat with other players.

Explorers

This type of player prefers wandering, roaming, and discovering easter eggs in games. For this type of player, finishing the game is not very important, and they like to spend time in the game, which is why they enter the game.
They can wander aimlessly in the game for hours, and this makes them happy.

If we need to give an example of this player type, we can say that these are people who wander the planets in No Man's Sky and don't aim much to finish the game.
