Linux VSFTPD FTP Server Installation


What is VSFTPD?

`vsftpd` stands for "Very Secure FTP Daemon" and is an FTP server software used on Linux and other Unix-based operating systems. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a network protocol used for transferring files from one computer to another. vsftpd allows you to transfer files using this protocol.


VSFTPD Features

  1. Security-Focused: As its name suggests, vsftpd is a very secure FTP server. It has many security features, and security measures are enabled by default.
  2. Performance: vsftpd is a high-performance FTP server. It has a lightweight and efficient design, enabling fast and efficient file transfers.
  3. Passive and Active Mode Support: Supports both passive and active FTP modes. This allows adaptation to different network configurations.
  4. Virtual Users and Virtual User Support: vsftpd can work with virtual users as well as real users on the system. This provides special configuration for FTP users.
  5. IPv6 Support: vsftpd also supports IPv6 networks, ensuring compatibility with future network infrastructures.
  6. Write Permission Management: Users’ write permission to files can be managed with vsftpd's flexible configuration options.
  7. Logging and Log Support: vsftpd supports logging mechanisms for recording and monitoring system events.


vsftpd is generally a preferred FTP server option in cases where servers are used for file transfer. However, it is important to configure and keep the security settings updated while using it. This minimizes potential security vulnerabilities and ensures data security during file transfers.


VSFTPD Installation

This guide is carried out on Ubuntu Server, so please do not forget to replace commands such as apt with those required by your own Linux distribution.

Since we are working on Linux, first let’s update our system to make sure it is up to date.

sudo apt update

After updating our system with the above command, now we download VSFTPD to our system.

sudo apt install vsftpd

After VSFTPD is installed on the system, we can configure our settings for installation. However, before configuring, we need to make sure that VSFTPD is installed. For this,

sudo systemctl status vsftpd

run the command; if the output looks like the one below, there is no problem.

Now let’s start making our fine-tuned configurations.

We need to open the vsftpd.conf file with Nano; you can use the command below for this.

sudo nano /etc/vsftpd.conf

When you open it, you will see a screen like the screenshot below.

As for what we have done here, we activated the write permission and a few more permissions by deleting the "#" at the beginning, such as "write_enable=YES". 

At the bottom line, we have determined which files the users will be responsible for.

We have assigned the necessary ports for FTP's passive mode, and our configuration file setup is complete.

Setting Up Users

sudo chown nobody:nogroup /home/username/ftp
sudo chmod a-w /home/username/ftp 
sudo mkdir /home/username/ftp/upload 
sudo chown user:user /home/user/ftp/upload echo "My FTP Server" | sudo tee /home/user/ftp/upload/demo.txt

You need to edit the necessary fields and copy these commands one by one in the terminal as above. Now let me explain what these commands do one by one for you.

sudo chown nobody:nogroup /home/username/ftp: This command sets the permissions for the /home/username/ftp folder with no special privileges. (You need to write the user account's username instead of username here.)

With sudo chmod a-w /home/username/ftp, we have granted the folder permissions.

With sudo mkdir /home/username/ftp/upload, we created a folder named upload inside the ftp folder.

With the fourth command, we created a txt file and wrote "My FTP Server" inside it.

Yes, friends, you can now connect to your ftp server with FileZilla or any FTP connection tool.
