SpeedRunners - Review

SPEEDRUNNERS
As a platform racing game, SpeedRunners successfully conveys the sense of competition to running. I’m not talking about just a straight run, but an endless run. The sole objective in this endless run is to be the last runner standing. All runners compete on the same screen—in other words, the screen, or rather the runnable area, is tied to whoever the leader is. If you get too far behind, below, or above the leader, you get disqualified. After the first person is disqualified, the running screen gradually starts to narrow towards the center, which can cause you to lose with even the slightest mistake.

Don’t think overtaking the leader is too hard, because SpeedRunners is full of variety. By collecting the blue stars around, you gain a random weapon. With these, you can launch rockets, drop bombs, place boxes on the roads, throw a huge rock, freeze other runners, and even get a hook that lets you grab the runner ahead of you and pull yourself quickly in front of them. Of course, dodging the hook and all other attacks is easy for some—just duck for some, or jump for others. Besides the weapons, the real danger is the levers on the map. Pulling these levers can close off some routes and open others—if you choose a long path and close the lever, those chasing you can’t follow, yes, but if closing it opens a shortcut, you might unexpectedly fall behind or even die. When you’re left behind, you also have a turbo-like bar to catch up with the others, which you can use. You get really fast for a short while, but remember—not only you have it, everyone does. To fill that bar, you need to pass through the blue rectangular spots on the map.

In SpeedRunners, which features a variety of maps and modes, there are beautiful characters, each one seeming like an animation or cartoon character. Therefore, while racing, you feel as if there’s a story. When playing with friends, there’s never a shortage of laughter, because someone is always making a mistake, getting themselves killed, or ending up in a funny situation. In short, if you like fast-paced games, SpeedRunners is just the game for you. It can also be played solo, but it becomes even more enjoyable with friends. My recommendation is definitely to play this game with 4 people together.
