This War of Mine - Review

TWOM

This War of Mine

This masterpiece, which pushes us to choose repeatedly between surviving and not losing our humanity, shows us the other dark and painful side of war beyond grabbing a gun and attacking the enemy directly as in the war games we've played so far. You will struggle to survive as a civilian. While playing, you will ask yourself questions, and most of the time, the answers will not stop your pangs of conscience. Only the voice inside will say: "I had to survive, that's why I killed you, I stole your belongings, I had no other choice, I'm sorry." You will witness such scenes that, even though you know that you would see worse in a real war, the images in front of you will break your heart. Sometimes you will want to be ruthless, sometimes you will want to help.

You might be saying, "I always help people," but don't forget that you are staying in a ruined house with 3 or 4 people, your food, supplies, and medicine are limited. Sometimes, you won't even be able to give your own characters medicine or food, and if there aren't enough beds, they will sleep on the hard ground. When these things start to happen, the player becomes more aggressive and fights more for survival than to help. In the morning, you handle household chores, you can trade with people who come to your door, follow broadcasts on the radio, help the little child at the door, or not—it's all your decision. Remember that every decision you make, whether killing someone or showing them mercy, helping someone or turning your back, will affect your characters, could put them into depression, or even cause them to commit suicide.

At night, one person goes out to scavenge, while the others either sleep or keep watch. When you go out to scavenge, someone might come to raid you as well—you never know, so leave one or two people on guard to avoid injuries or loss of supplies. The person who goes scavenging needs to sleep the next day; being well-rested is as important as medicine and food. Each character has different abilities, different life stories, and, if any, different addictions (cigarettes, coffee). It's good to assign tasks according to their abilities because one can carry more items, another runs fast, another is good at cooking, and so on.

The game's atmosphere and music are so beautiful that you inevitably start to bond with the characters you play. You read their stories and listen to their reactions, and you start to care for them. When someone dies, the others become sad, and you feel sad too. That character won't come back, but you stay motivated thinking there's still a chance for the others. You can be killed easily by soldiers, so be careful against them. Try to silently take down enemies one by one without rushing. Make sure not to make noise while doing this, or they will find out where you are.

Finally, I'm glad that such a beautiful game was made. Those who have the opportunity should play as soon as possible. The DLCs add small stories, but if you can, get the complete package. Do not worry, even without the DLCs, the game itself can show you the dark side of war.
