What is 2FA? What is Two-Factor Authentication?

2FA, that is, two-step/two-factor authentication, is a security step that requires you to confirm your login with a second method in addition to your username and password when you want to log in to your account on any application or website.

In general, 2FA enables you to log into your account by entering the code sent via SMS, email, or through special applications developed for this purpose into the system, or by approving via a link.

In addition to these digital solutions, there are also 2FA protection types developed with special password/signature keys.

If you want me to give an example of 2FA, when you want to log into your Google account from anywhere, the approval box that appears on your device, or if the approval box does not appear, the SMS containing the text "G-XXXX" sent to your device are examples of 2FA that you use in daily life to access your Google account.

Why Should We Use Two-Factor Authentication?

You should definitely use two-factor authentication to ensure the security of your accounts. Your device may be infected with a virus, and these viruses can steal your passwords; in such cases, if you do not use two-step authentication, your account can be accessed very easily. 

However, if two-step authentication is enabled on your account, it will be much harder for them to access it.

Someone next to you may see and remember your password while you are logging into any of your accounts in a crowded place. Of course, I know this is very unlikely, but if you are faced with such a situation, that person can easily access your account. However, on an account that uses two-step authentication, the person would also need the password for this second step, making it much more difficult to log in.

Applications You Can Use for Two-Factor Authentication

Google Authenticator

This is the two-factor authentication application that I generally use and trust; it is backed by Google and can be used very easily on your mobile devices.
It supports many websites and applications.


Authy

I have never used it so far, but I know it is the most used two-step authentication method in the market. Among the applications here, it is the one that supports the most websites and applications.

Unlike others, it is also available on computers.


Microsoft Authenticator

This is an authentication application backed by Microsoft; I have never used it, but since it is backed by Microsoft, I can say it is more secure than many other applications.


Yandex Key

This is the application I use to protect my Yandex account, which generates a new password each time and allows me to log into my Yandex account with this newly generated password.
It can be used not only for Yandex but also for many other applications and websites.
