What is a Hyper Casual Game?

Hyper casual games, as they are more commonly known, are games, particularly in the mobile game sector, that producers designate for games that are very simple to play.

Let's take a more detailed look at this game genre.

What is a Hyper Casual game?

They are games that are extremely simple to play and can be played with at most 2 or 3 mechanics. These games are simple enough to be played on a bus, a minibus, in a car, or even while on the toilet, and they do not tire the user much.

Developed with extremely simple interfaces that are very easy to understand, these games are so simple that even a 3-year-old child could play them and grasp them without playing a tutorial section.

These games are simple enough for players to spend a short amount of time on or to play to alleviate boredom during the loading screen of a computer game, and generally, these games have an endless structure. That is, the player keeps playing until they lose that round, and the level never ends.

This endless game mechanic aims to create addiction in the player and accomplishes this by offering a higher score, a different map look, or a more challenging design as you play.

The player's goal in Hyper Casual games is to reach the highest score or to surpass their friends.

Hyper Casual games are generally free and do not have a very sophisticated in-game economy system; there is a very simple economy system which does not push the player to buy items with real money. Therefore, the main source of income for such games is entirely ads.

If we look at these ads;

  • Banner Ad: Fixed ads located at the very top or bottom of the screen.
  • Full Screen Ad (Interstitial Ad): Ads that appear when you lose in the game.
  • Rewarded Ad: Ads that let you continue from where you left off when you lose in the game, or ads that give you a bonus in return for watching them.

History of Hyper Casual Games

Yes, now let’s come to the endless and deep history of these games (I am definitely joking.). First of all, these games definitely do not have as deep a history as you might think and actually date back to quite recent times.

Hyper Casual games emerged as a result of mobile devices entering the market and becoming popular. Although I don't know the exact date they first appeared, they gained major momentum around 2017.

Hyper Casual games are highly reminiscent of the designless and gameplay-light games of the 1970s. (Pong could be a good example of this.)
Hyper Casual games have managed to reach very large audiences and to generate very large amounts of money. The Hyper Casual game that made its producer the most money without any in-game sales system reached around 50 million downloads and succeeded in making $50,000 per day: the game Flappy Bird. (Speaking of Flappy Bird, I should write an article about that game as well.)

In 2016, Ubisoft (generally known for Assassin's Creed), which produces computer games, bought the Hyper Casual game company Ketchapp.
And in 2017, Goldman Sachs invested $200 million in Voodoo (you probably know it from Helix Jump.)

What we understand is that there is money in this business.
