What is itch.io?

 Itch.io is a website that allows independent developers to publish, sell, and collect donations for their games. It was first launched by Leaf Corcoran on March 3, 2013.

In 2018, with 100,000 independent games, it became quite widespread among indie developers.

On itch.io, publishers and developers can charge for their games and sell them for a fee. For games they upload for free, they can request donations.

For every paid or donated game on itch.io, about 10% of the fee or donation is taken by itch.io as a commission, but this commission rate can be increased or decreased by the person or team publishing the game.

Itch.io is not just a game sharing platform but also a platform that can be used to follow and participate in events called Game Jams, where game developers create games based on a theme within a short time and compete.

Game developers can participate in these Game Jams, organized with sponsors, through itch.io and showcase their games.

In major events with big prizes like the Global Game Jam (GGJ), we can say that it is almost mandatory to use itch.io.

You don't need to have an account to download games from itch.io, but you do need an account to upload your own games to the platform.

If you ask for my personal opinion, actually itch.io can be used as a market to understand how a game store operates for free before releasing your games on stores like Google Play, Steam, and AppStore. This can give you valuable experience, and with the experience you gain here, you can approach other application markets much more confidently and perform your tasks more consciously.
