What is a Search Engine? How Do Search Engines Work?
What is a Search Engine?
A search engine is software that adds websites found on the Internet to its own databases and then, using web browsers, presents the user with the information or query they are looking for.
Information found on the Internet can be accessed thanks to search engines, and it can be said that these are the software that enables everyone to quickly access the information they are searching for on the Internet.
If we need to give examples of the most popular search engines today:
To summarize in general how search engines work: it starts by crawling the structures called sitemaps that site owners add to the system, adds the pages found on that site to its own database, then visits the added pages and adds the sites linked by those pages to its own database as well, advancing by crawling and adding as many sites as possible to its own database, and then ranking them according to certain conditions to present to the person performing the search.
The bots that wander through websites and add them to the database are called web crawlers.
We can say that a search engine consists of 3 parts. (If we take it at a very simple level.)
Web Crawler - Index - User Interface
Web Crawler: The robot/bot that crawls sites, finds other sites, scans site content, can score this content, has many other features, and finally adds site data to the index.
Index: The place where site data is stored, database.
User Interface: The section the end user uses to make a query on the Internet.
The working principle of search engines is developed in such a way that, based on these 3 main components, it aims to deliver the information the user wants as well as the correct, i.e., reliable information.
One of the most well-known search engine algorithms today is the "Page Rank" algorithm, which was developed as a university thesis by the founders of Google. Although it was discontinued by Google in 2014, it remains a very important algorithm for us.
This algorithm basically scores your site or any site with a score between 0 and 10, and this score is given based on how many other sites are linking to your site and the number of sites your site is linking to.
.
If we need to explain this more simply: if your site receives links from 10 sites and your site links to 1 site, it can be said that your site's score would be 10.
We have come to the end of this article. If you have any further questions about the working principles of search engines, you can ask in the comments.
