What is Terravision?

 What is Terravision?

Terravision is a 3D mapping software developed by German ART+COM and released in Berlin in 1994 as "a networked virtual representation of the world based on satellite images, aerial photography, elevation data, and architectural data."

Deutsche Telekom supported the development of the project.

Terravision is a networked virtual representation of the world based on satellite images, aerial photos, elevation data, and architectural data.
Terravision makes terrestrial data visible, tangible, and interactively explorable.

Terravision was the first system to provide seamless navigation and visualization in a very large spatial data environment.

Terravision is the simultaneous realization of the literary idea in Neal Stephenson's novel "Snow Crash" and also a preview/book of Google Earth.

How Was Terravision Used?

Terravision

In order to use Terravision, a globe was present in the first version, and there was a rotatable button on it.

While spinning the world with the globe in Terravision, you could zoom in/out on the world by turning the button on it.

In the new version, while the globe is still present, the button has been replaced by a touchscreen to enable interaction.

Recommendation about Terravision

My recommendation regarding Terravision is to watch the series "The Billion Dollar Code" on Netflix; the series tells the story of the lawsuit between the Terravision team ART+COM and Google, which released Google Earth 10 years after Terravision.

I can tell you in advance that Google won the case, but which side is right is unknown. I leave the decision to you and share the show's trailer here.
